Learning Lowell Facebook Group Directory

Facebook Groups are a great way to connect online with other Lowellians. Notably, this directory contains only local-interest groups, although Lowellians will certainly be interested in other groups as well. This directory will be a work in progress. If you know of another group to list, do not want your group listed here, or believe a description should be amended, please fill out the form at the bottom of the page.

Note that a few people have submitted a request to add a Facebook “page.” This directory is only for groups, which are more about users engaging with one another than pages, which are for an organization or business to engage with a community. For more information, check out our primer on Facebook groups.

Born and Raised in Lowell
619 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/218619208316276/
“This group was created to pay homage to anyone who was Born And Raised In Lowell, and to serve as a portal for them to reconnect with friends and memories from the near and distant past.”

Friends and memories from Lowell MA
968 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/388431107872101/
I wouldn’t have listed this group, as it has no description and is closed, but it isn’t private and seems to be a very large group! This looks like a place to share Lowell stories.

Innovative Cities: Lowell, Massachusetts
475 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/340046822707630/
Lowell hosted an Innovative Cities conference in 2010 in which speakers from Lowell and five other cities using innovative municipal techniques for economic and community development shared ideas and best practices. This forum appears to continue that discussion, with posts about neat things happening in Lowell and other cities across the nation.

Lowell Emergent Generation
345 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/lowellemergentgeneration/
As I understand it, this group came about in a focus group about Lowell’s “emergent generation,” those 22-35. Many now post about events and volunteer opportunities in the group. From the group’s description: “to connect people interested in Lowell’s progress and future.”

Lowell High School Alumni Lowell MA
2,000 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/8643242689/
This is the biggest Lowell group I stumbled across: a lot of folks graduated LHA! It’s a closed group, so I don’t know what kind of stories they share. There are also many groups for specific graduating classes.

Lowell Live Feed Forum
428 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/555411627863927/
This is a group for anyone interested in discussing community development or politics of Lowell. As far as I know, anybody is invited, so long as they don’t block the moderator. The conversations can get a little heated, but it’s also a great source of political and cultural news.

The Misfits of Lowell
460 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/639152316094991/
“The purpose of this group is to provide a venue for people who have a connection to Lowell, MA to share their stories.” The description also mentions it being a safe haven for folks “kicked out of one or more of those other” groups, and I’m sure there’s a story there somewhere.

A very active group sharing photos and memories of Lowell’s past. In addition, folks post event announcements.

Centraville Neighborhood
333 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/cnaglowell
“This group is used for communicating events and points of interest in the neighborhood of Centralville.” There’s a lot of Centralville event posts here!

Highlands Lowell, MA
967 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/135838201390
This Highlands-focused group appears to share many historic photos.

The Acre Lowell, MA
364 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/137951468297/
This group appears to only have about a post a month or so, but contains posts reminiscing about the Acre of years past, news of the Acre present, and discussion about the Acre future.

Buying and Selling

Freecycle Merrimack Valley
956 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/677721892299666/
This group is like a buy/sell group, but is only for items that folks are giving away for free. It’s a great way to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills and connect people with the things they need. I see a lot of baby items and old computer things being given away! You can also post “iso” or “in search of,” and ask if anyone’s giving away a particular item you need.

I Am Selling In The Greater Lowell Area
3,856 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/IAmSellingInTheGreaterLowellArea/
Lowell has a great number of “online yard sales” that appear to be something of a Facebook version of Craigslist. This is the largest, but there are also groups for different clusters of the surrounding towns.

Kicks in Lowell for Trade or Sale
2,230 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/241804379185668/
Yep, kicks as in “shoes.”

Special Interest and Organizations

Note: Organization groups are often more about the organization’s interest than about the organization itself. This is why they are mixed with other special interest groups. Organizations may also have pages, which is often how organizations share news and events related to the organization itself.

Arts League of Lowell (ALL)
248 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/171570735969/
ALL is a nonprofit with a mission “to be a community of artists of all expressions, to encourage mutual support, facilitate the sharing of knowledge, and provide a unified voice for the arts,” according to their website. Anyone can see ALL’s facebook group posts, filled with announcements of arts events around the city.

Greater Lowell Software Professionals
34 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/339550562722411/
“Anything computer geeks may find informative, useful, or amusing. Bonus points if the content is local!”

Lowell Film Collaborative
455 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/LowellFilmCollaborative/
This group allows members to talk about the films LFC sponsor or other local film events. If you like independent movies and local documentaries, this group is for you!

Lowell Bike Coalition
209 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/lowellbikecoalition
The Lowell Bike Coalition includes discussion about bike safety and advocates for a city that provides proper and safe cycling facilities to all. Members share interesting strategies from other cities and talk about how we can advocate for bringing those strategies to Lowell. A very interesting group that formed when bike lanes were threatened by the city council; now the group even organized a bicycle light giveaway!

Lowell friendly bike rides
176 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/lowellbikerides
Although this group’s description lists it as a resource for those interested in weekly rides, it appears to have all sorts of bike-interested members and posts about regional bike news, nearby bike trails, and bike events.

Lowell Maker Space Fab Lab Co-op Initiative
113 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/LowellMakerSpace
A space for makers and maker-curious to share news and ideas, with about one new post a month. This was one tool that Lowell Makes used to build a critical mass of stakeholders, and much of the activity has moved to Lowell Makes’s facebook page.

135 Members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/506302512713258/
Group for supporters of UTEC to hear about the latest happenings first, in addition to sharing any new ideas to further UTEC’s work. This doesn’t appear to be too active a group, as UTEC shares news and events on its page rather than in its group.

Business Fan Clubs

Note: Businesses often have Facebook “pages,” but only groups are listed here.

Friends of the Owl Diner
398 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/45673007193
A surprisingly active group sharing memories and news about Four Sisters Owl Diner.

Top Donut Lowell
130 members – https://www.facebook.com/groups/90642396656
Not too active, but what is there to say about Top Donut but “Delicious?”
